PORTFOLIO

Because I began painting late in life, I'm a child in all paint mediums. In art I want to learn like a fearless child, so using a technique taught by Robert Burridge called "Loosen Up With Acrylics" is what I need right now. Currently I'm experimenting and practicing with acrylic.

Several months ago I studied with a Chinese artist named Cheng-Khee Chee to learn Chinese Marblizing, Saturated Wet, and Splash watercolor techniques. His creative philosophy of painting relies upon "Taoist philosophy, finding the most natural and effortless way to express the essence of a specific subject for which (one) has deep feelings," from The Work of Cheng-Khee Chee. These processes were especially timely and a beneficial outlet for self expression as I searched for deeper meanings to life and death. Art has been my spiritual life support and life giver for the last 4 years since the death of my eldest son, Jefferson.

Four years ago my early paintings were based on my technical drawing skills. I approached painting as I would a drawing; first making a drawing then coloring it with paint. I considered it copying until a recent workshop with John Salminen inspired me to return to my natural instinctive way of painting.  The workshop  had a strong focus on design principles, an area where I am weak. Arnie Westerman's workshop with emphasis on the figure has brought me full circle. The human form is my passion. I am hopeful that these workshops will improve my paintings.
